THE EFFECT OF USING HERRINGBONE TECHNQUE ON READING ACHIEVEMENT FOR FIRST GRADE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Research at SMP Negeri 3 Adiwerna in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of Using Herringbone Technique of the First Grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Adiwerna in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
Based on the review of related literature, theoritical framework, the hypothesis is proposed as follows: there is a positive effect of using Herringbone Technique on Reading Achievement of the First Grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Adiwerna in the Academic Year of 2016/2017.
This research is experimental research. The population of this research is the first grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Adiwerna in the Academic Year of 2016/2017 which consist of 240 students. In this research, the writer used 2 classes (VII B and VII C) which consisted of 30 students for each class as the sample of the research who were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In designing study, the writer used Two-Group Design which consisted of two classes that was the same level, they was class VII B as experiment group and class VII C as control group. The writer used reading test as the type of instrument of the research by using multiple choice design which consisted of 40 items with four alternative a, b,c and d.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to find out the difference of reading achievement of the two groups. Based on the result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances was 1,672. While t-ratio was 2,403. So, t-ratio was higher than t-table (2,403 > 1,672). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on reading achievement between the students who are taught by applying Heringbone Technique and those who were not taught by applying Herringbone Technique.
The result of this research shows that applying Herringbone Technique has a positive effect on reading achievement of first grade students of SMP N 3 Adiwerna in the academic year of 2016/2017. Herringbone Technique is one of the effective and efficient ways to improve students’ ability. Teacher should be creative in using learning method or learning strategy because implementing the right method or strategy can reduce students’ stress and boredom.
