THE EFFECT OF WORD CARD STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research to the Seventh Grade of SMP N 1 Talang in the Academic Year of 2016/2017)

Word Cards is one of the strategies that is effectively improve the students vocabulary knowledge. The objective of this research was to find out the effect ofWord Card Strategy on Students’ Vocabulary Achievementof the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Talangin Academic year 2016/2017.
Based on review of related theories, frame of thinking a hypothesis of this research was the use of Word Cardswill give positive effect toward students’ vocabulary achievement of the seventh graders of SMP N 1 Talang in Academic year 2016/2017.
The population of this research was seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Talang in Academic year 2015/2016 which consist of 329 students. The sample of this research was 60 students, consist of 30 students as the experimental group and 30 students as the control group. The experimental group was a group of the students which teach by using word card strategy and the control group is a group of the students which was not teach using word card strategy.This research was experimental research. The samples are taken by using cluster random sampling.
The instrument used in this research is test. The type of the test used is multiple choices with 4 options (A, B, C, or D). The number of the test is 40 items done in 80 minutes. The writer conducts try out test on 30 students who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument.
The collected data was analyzed through SPSS 22.00 Windows Version of paired sample t-test and independents sample t-test in order to test the hypotheses of this research project. Based on data analysis, it was stated that the result of Sig. 2 tailed was lower than α (0.005<0.05). The statement means the null hypothesis (H02) was refused and the alternative hypothesis (Ha2) was accepted.
The conclusion of this research that there was significant difference between students who were taught by using Word Card Strategy and students who were not taught by using Word Card Strategy. After doing the research, the writer had some suggestions. The English teachers can use the word card strategies as an alternative in vocabulary teaching and learning in junior high schools. It is better to promote this strategy in combination with other vocabulary learning strategies or vocabulary exercises because students can be more autonomous and independent however teachers can still control their vocabulary development.
