The objective of this research project was to find out whether using Wait Time Questioning strategy gives positive effect on students’ reading achievement. Wait Time Questioning strategy was one of strategy which used in teaching reading. The research hypothesis was Wait Time Questioning strategy gives positive effect on students reading achievement. This strategy was applied to the seventh grade students of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Jatinegara in Academic Year
2017/2018.
The population was the seventh grade students in SMP Ma’arif NU 04
Jatinegara, which was totaly 184 students. The writer used random sampling with two group design (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total sample was
60 students; 30 students as experiment group and 30 students as control group. The experiment group was the group of students who were taught by using wait time questioning strategy. The control group was the group of students who were taught by using conventional strategy. After teaching for eight meetings, the writer gave a test to experiment group and control group. The instrument of this research project was multiple-choice test which consists of 40 items and research used each items had four options.
The writer analyzed data by using t-test, score of t-test was 5,202. While score of t-table was at 5% level significance and on the degree of 58 was 1,672. Thus, t-test was higher than t-table (5,202>1,672). According to result of data, hypothesis t-test was rejected, and hypothesis t-table was accepted.
The conclusion of this research was there was positive effect on students’ reading achievement to the students who were taught by using wait time questioning strategy. Then, the writer suggests to the English teachers use wait time questioning strategy to improve reading achievement of the students.
