Vocabulary is one of important aspects in learning English. If the students have weaknesses in vocabulary, they will be difficult to communicate. One of strategy that can be used in teaching vocabulary is the use of wordwall display. It is collection of word which are displayed in large visible letters on a wall. It is one of strategy that will help teacher to teach vocabulary easily.
The purpose of this research is to to find out the effect of applying wordwall display toward the students’ vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs IPTEK Hubul Wathon Pagerbarang in the academic year 2016/2017.
Based on the problem and the logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is : the application of wordwall display gives positive effect toward the students’vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTs IPTEK Hubul Wathon Pagerbarang in the academic year 2016/2017.
In this research, the writer used quantitative approach, experimental research, and two groups design. The population of this research was all of the second year students of MTs IPTEK Hubbul Wathon Pagerbarang which consisted of 120 students. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to take samples of the research. The Total of the samples were 60 students that were divided into two groups. The first group was experiment group which consist of 30 students who were taught by applying Word Wall Display. The second group was control group which consist of 30 students who were not taught by applying Word Wall Display.
The writer used multiple choice vocabulary test with 4 options; A, B, C, D as the instrument of this research. The items of the test were 40 questions. The writer conducted try out test on 30 students to determine validity and reliability of the test. After the data had been analyzed by using t- test, the writer obtained 3,346 of the t-test result, whereas the t-table was 2,002 of significant level of df = 5%. The result of the t-test was higher than the t-table (3,346 > 2,002). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected, since t-test score was higher than t-table, Word Wall Display gives a positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the second years of MTs IPTEK Hubbul Wathon Pagerbarang in academic year 2016/2017. The writer suggests to teachers that they should apply Word Wall Display in teaching vocabulary for their students.
