This study aims to determine whether there is influence of using Language Experience Approach (LEA) to students’ reading achievement. The Language Experience Approach (LEA) is one type of method that can be used in teaching English.
The research hypothesis is whether there is a positive influence of the application of Language Experience Approach to students’ reading achievement at the Seventh Grade at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Tegal in academic year 2017/2018.
In this study, the population was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tegal. The number of population was 168. The researcher uses random sampling technique, using two group designs (Experiment Group and Control Group). The total of sample were 56 students. First group was 28 students as experimental group and the second group was 28 students as control group. The experimental group was a group of students taught using the LEA method. The control group was a group that is taught by ordinary learning. After teaching for seven meetings, the researcher gives the same test to the experimental group and the control group. The research instrument used in this study was multiple choice test consisting of 40 questions and each question had 4 options of answer.
In this research, the data was analized by using t-test. The result of t-test was 2,5097. The t-table value is 5% in the significance level and the ratio value of 54 is 1.674. Thus, the t-test was higher than the t-table (2.5097> 1.674). Based on the data, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted.
It could be concluded that there was a positive influence on the reading achievement of students who taught using the LEA, rather than those taught using ordinary teaching. Based on the analysis above, the use of LEA gave a positive influence on the reading achievement of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Kota Tegal. Therefore, the researcher suggest English teachers use the Method of Language Experience Approach to improve students’ reading achievement.
