Most of the second grade students in SMP N 3 Randudongkal got bad score of English reading test. They were not given a good technique in reading lesson. A new technique to teach reading is needed. The objectives of this researchto find out the effect of herringbone technique onthe students’ reading comprehension and to find out the significant difference between the students who are taught by using herringbone technique and the students who are not taught by using herringbone technique to the second graders of SMP N 3 Randudongkal in the academic year 2017/2018.
The research used two group designs. The total population in this research is 258. The random sampling technique is used to choose the sample. The sample is divided into two groups; the first group is experiment group that consist of students who are taught by usingherringbone technique and the second is control group that consist of students who are not taught by usingherringbone technique. In collecting the data, pre test and post test are conducted. And the data analysis is calculated by using SPSS program.
The first null hypothesis (H01) is tested by using paired sample t test, it is found that the result of Sig. (2 tailed) is lower than α (0,000 < 0,05). It means that the first null hypothesis (H01) is refused. It means that the herringbone technique gave positive effect on the students’ reading comprehension. And the second hypothesis is tested by independent sample t test, it is found that the result of t test is higher than t table (5,098 > 1,672). It means that the second null hypothesis (H02) is refused. It means that there is significant difference students reading comprehension between the students who are taught by using herringbone technique and the students who are not taught by using herringbone technique.
It can be concluded that the use ofherringbone technique is effective and there is significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension to the second graders students of SMP N 3 Randudongkal in the academic year
2017/2018. The writer also suggested for English teachers to use herringbone
technique to increase reading comprehension.
