The objective of this research is to find out whether Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy is effective in teaching reading. The population of this research is the seventh grade students at SMP N 4 Taman in the academic year of 2017/2018. The number of population is 259 students from 8 classes. This research is conducted by using two group design; the first group is called experimental group which was taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy, while the second group is called control group which was taught by Jigsaw strategy. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling. Each group of samples consists of 30 students.
The instrument used in this research is multiple choice. Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test in order to find out whether the research hypothesis is accepted or not. Based on the calculation, the t-ratio is 3,737. It is consulted with t-table on the significant level (α) of 5% and the degree of freedom (df) is 58. The t-table obtained is 1,672. It proves that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,737 > 1,672), so the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is that students which was taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy get better reading achievement than students which was not taught by using Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy. Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy is proven to be one of the effective strategy to make students interested in learning reading. It also makes students enjoyed in reading, so it prevents the students from getting bored to found important information in the text.
English teachers are suggested to apply Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) strategy in the teaching of reading. They should also motivate their students awareness about importance of reading for their life to make learning reading more enjoyable.
