AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE RECOUNT TEXT (A Case of the Second Grade of SMP N 6 Petarukan in Academic Year of 2017/2018)

Writing is one of the important things from four basic skills in English learning. Based on the curriculum of KTSP requires the students to understand and to write some kinds of texts in form of functional text like recount text. Recount text is a piece of text which retells past events usually in the order in which they happened. Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in analyzing students’ ability to write recount text.
The objectives of this research are to find out the students’ ability in writing recount text and to find out the students’ problems faced in writing recount text of the second grade of SMP N 6 Petarukan in the academic year of 2017/2018.
This research is a descriptive qualitative. The methods of collecting data are writing test and document. Data of the research are the student works in writing recount text. The techniques of analyzing data are (1) collecting the data from the student works in writing recount text, (2) analyzing the data based on the criteria of writing recount text, (3) discussing the result of research based on the data from the previous step, and (4) drawing conclusion and giving suggestion.
Based on the analyzed data, there are 6 students who belong to the good category (20,69%), 16 students who belong to the fair category (55,17%), 7 students who belong to the poor category (24,14%), and there are not students who belong very good category or very poor category. The aspect of writing that become students’ problems are 5 or 1,79% total students’ problem in the organization, 54 or 19,29% in vocabulary, 133 or 47,50% in language use or grammar, 84 or 30,00 % in the mechanism, and in content there is no problem in students’ writing recount text.
From the data above, it can be concluded that the average students’ ability in writing recount text of the second grade of SMP N 6 Petarukan is fair. the aspects of writing recount text that become the problems faced by the students are grammar, mechanism, and vocabulary, where grammar is the main problem with the highest mistakes made by the students. The researcher suggests to the teacher needs to teach more about grammar, mechanism, and vocabulary in writing recount text and to the next researcher can further the research with an interesting technique or strategies to solve the students’ problem in writing.
