Translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text. Passive voice is one of English grammar form that can make people confused because there is a change between the subject and the object. In this research, the researcher discussed about the translation analysis of passive voice from English into Indonesian which is found in the novel ‘A Walk to Remember’ by Nicholas Sparks and Its Indonesian translation by Kathleen SW.
The objectives of this Research Project are the researcher wants to find out how the English passive voice translated into Indonesian and to find out the translation shifts that happened in the translation of passive voice in the novel ‘A Walk To Remember’ by Nicholas Sparks and its Indonesian translation by Kathleen SW. This Research Project was based on descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation method because the researcher got the data from a novel.
In the result, there were 188 passive voices which were found in the novel. They are 120 (63, 8%) English passive voice which are translated into Indonesian passive type one, 35 (18, 6%) English passive voice which are translated into Indonesian passive type two, and 33 (17, 6%) English passive voice which are translated into Indonesian active voice. Level shifts and Category Shifts were occurred in the translation. For the level shifts, it happened when there was a changing from grammar to lexis. Meanwhile, for the category shifts, there were two types of the category shifts which mostly occurred in the translation. They are structure-shifts and class-shifts.
Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the passive type one is the most frequent Indonesian passive voice that the translator used. For the translation shifts, the shifts that mostly occurred are level shifts, structure-shift, and class-shift. The researcher suggested the reader and the Pancasakti University Tegal students, especially English Department students who are interested in this subject, learning more about passive voice of both of the languages and read a lot of book about translation is really needed to make a better research.
