The objective of this research is to find out whether Group Investigation Technique is effective to be used in the teaching of Writing for Eighth-Grade Students in SMP Negeri 4 Wanasari Brebes in the second semester of the academic year of 2017/2018.
The population of this research is the Eighth-Grade students in SMP Negeri 4 Wanasari Brebes in the academic year of 2017/2018. The number of population is 236 students from 7 classes. This research is conducted by using two group design the first group is called experimental group that consists of the students who are taught by applying Group Investigation Technique, while the second group is called control group that consists of the students who are taught by applying Mind Mapping Technique. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling. Each group of samples consists of 30 students.
The instrument used in this research. The test is writing test in form of an essay. There was one paragraph. Each paragraph contained a topic sentence. The students of both groups had to develop the topic sentences into good paragraphs which consisted of at least 50 words for each paragraph. They had 90 minutes to finish their writing test. The test is carried out to find out whether students who are taught by applying Group Investigation Technique get better writing achievement than students who are taught by applying Mind Mapping Technique. The writing test is assessed through Brown’s writing scoring rubric.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test in order to find out whether the research hypothesis is accepted or not. Based on the calculation, the t-ratio is 2.362. It is consulted with t-table on the significant level (α) of 5% and the degree of freedom (df) is 58. The t-table obtained is 1.672. It proves that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2.362 > 1.672), so the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is that students who are taught by applying Group Investigation Technique get better writing achievement than students who are taught by applying Mind Mapping Technique. Group Investigation Technique is proven to be one of the effective techniques to make students interested in learning writing.English teachers are suggested to applying Group Investigation Technique in the teaching of writing.
