The experimental research was used in this research to know the effect of using hand puppets as media on students’ speaking skill. The population of this research is all of the eighth grade students at SMP N 1 Tegal in the Academic Year 2017/2018, which is totally 240 students divided into eight classes (VIII A-VIII H). The sample was taken using cluster random sampling technique with two group design. The samples were divided into 2 groups. The groups which was randomly selected for the research is class VIII E as the experimental group and class VIII G as the control group. The number of the experimental group is 30 students and the control group is 30 students. The experimental group was taught with the treatment of using hand puppets as media and the control group was taught with other treatment in seven meetings. The control group used pictures as media. In the last meeting, post-test was given to experimental and control group with the same speaking test.
Data analysis of this research was tested by using t-test. The result of computing t-test score is 3,108. While score of t-table at the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5% is 1,672. Thus, t-test is higher than t-table (3,108>1,672). It means that there is any significant difference between experimental group and control group.
In conclusion, the use of hand puppets as media gives positive effect on students’ speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Tegal in academic year 2017/2018.
