THE EFFECT OF USING CONTEXT CLUES STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Study at the Second Graders of SMA Negeri 1 Bantarbolang in the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

The objective of this research is to find out whether using Context Clues Strategy gives the positive effect towards students’ achievement in reading comprehension at the second graders of SMA Negeri 1 Bantarbolang in the academic year of 2017/2018. The hypothesis of this research is “There is a positive effect of using Context Clues Strategy towards students’ achievement in reading comprehension”. The population of this research is the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bantarbolang consisted of five classes with the number of population 159 students. In this research, the writer took two classes as the sample by cluster random sampling, which consists of 30 students per class. The instrument used in this research is reading test. The test contained 40 items of multiple choices type question with five alternative answers (A, B, C, D and E). In order to know the validity and reliability of the instrument, the writer conducted the try out test to 30 students out of samples who have similiar qualification and ability with the sample. The data analysis was calculated by using t-test formula. Based on the measurement of t-test, the value of t-test was 2,894. At the level of significant 5% and degree of freedom (df) 58, the t-table was 1,672. It shows that the t-test is higher than t-table (2,894>1,672). It means the null hypothesis (H_0) is refused and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accpeted. Based on the explanation above, the writer concludes that there is positive effect of using Context Clues Strategy towards students’ achievement in reading comprehension at the second graders of SMA Negeri 1 Bantarbolang in the academic year of 2017/2018. After doing the research, the writer has some suggestions, teaching reading will be easy when the teachers use Context Clues Strategy because the students feel comfortable to study. Consequently, the result of their study will increase.
