THE EFFECT OF USING POSSE (PREDICT, ORGANIZE, SEARCH, SUMMARIZE, EVALUATE) STRATEGY TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study on the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 4 Tegal in the Academic Year 2017/2018)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using POSSE strategy in teaching reading toward the eleventh grade students of SMA N 4 Tegal in the academic year 2017/2018.
The research of hypothesis is the use of POSSE strategy gives a positive effect toward students’ reading achievement. POSSE strategy is applied to the eleventh grade students of SMA N 4 Tegal in teaching explanation text.
The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA N 4 Tegal that consists of 278 students. The writer took sample by using cluster random sampling technique. There were 2 classes as sample of the research. The total of sample is 60 students.
In this research, the writer used experimental research with two group design. There are 30 students as experiment group and 30 students as control group. Experiment group is a group which is taught by using POSSE strategy and control group is a group which is not taught by using POSSE strategy.
Thus, the writer used post-test only. Before the instrument was tested to experiment and control group, the instrument had been tested to another class (non sample). The purpose is to know its validity and reliability. After that, the writer gave a reading test with multiple choice to experiment and control group after teaching for seven meetings.
The writer analyzed data by using t-test. Based on the calculation, the score of t-test is 3,767 meanwhile the score of t-table on the significant level 5% and the degree of freedom 58 is 1,672. Thus, the result of t-test is higher than t-table (3,767 > 1,672) so the hypothesis of this research (H1) is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that POSSE strategy gives positive effect toward students’ reading achievement of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 4 Tegal. Therefore, the writer suggests English teacher to use POSSE strategy in learning process.
