The objective of this thesis is to find out the effect of applying visual dictionary on students vocabulary achievement. Visual dictionary is one of teaching media that is good to improve students vocabulary achievement.
Based on the theoretical background and logical frame of thinking, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: “applying visual dictionary in the teaching vocabulary has a positive effect on students vocabulary achievement of the fifth-grade students”.
In this research, the population are 13 classes of the fifth grade of Elementary School in North Dukuhturi. The writer used cluster random sampling with two group design. The total of the sample are 2 classes with each class consists of 22 students. The first class is as experiment group and the second class is as control group.
The experiment group is the group who are taught by applying visual dictionary. The control group is the group who are taught without applying visual dictionary. After teaching for eight meetings, the writer gives a vocabulary test to the experiment group and control group.
The writer used a vocabulary test as the instrument in this research. There are 40 numbers of multiple choice, with choices A, B, C, and D, and consisted of 20 items of easy questions, 10 items of medium questions, and 10 items of hard questions which covered the materials about shape, transportation, health and hospital, profession, library and weather and season with 70 minutes time allocation.
The writer analyse the data by using a t-test, a score of t-test is 2,91. While the score is at 5% level significance and on the degree of 42 is 2,68. Thus t-test is higher than t-table (2,91 > 2,68). According to result of data, so the alternative hypothesis of the research (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected.
The conclusion of this research is that applying visual dictionary in the teaching English vocabulary gives a positive effect on students vocabulary achievement of the fifth-grade students of SD Negeri Ketanggungan 01 Dukuhturi in the academic year 2017/2018.
Thus, the writer suggests theEnglish teacher to apply visual dictionary in learning vocabulary because it will enable students to memorize new words easily.
