AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS ON THE STUDENTS’ WRITING PERSONAL LETTER A Descriptive study on the Second Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal in the Academic Year of 2017/2018

Writing is an action or a process of discovering and organizing your ideas, putting them on a paper and reshaping and revising them. One of the components which are also very important in making writing is grammar. Grammar is a science of language in making or combining words into sentences. Based on the syllabus for Senior High School, there are four English skills that should be mastered by the students; one of them is writing. The second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal also develop their writing skill in making short functional texts, short functional text which is chosen by researcher is personal letter, because in a daily activity, many workers around us are not apart from writing letter activity in every office.
The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds of grammatical errors and the most common grammatical errors made by the students in making personal letter at SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal in academic year 2017/2018. This research project belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research is the eleventh-grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal which are totally 16 students. The researcher uses a writing test to get the data. The data is analyzed by the theory of Dullay.
The result of this study showed that there were 42 or 35% errors in tenses, 26 or 21,66% errors in word order, 24 or 20% errors in spelling, 14 or 11,66% errors in pronoun, 5 or 4,16% errors in singular/plural, 4 or 3,33% errors in preposition, 3 or 2,5% errors in article and the last from conjunction with 2 or 1,66% errors. Based on the total result types of errors, the researcher found that tenses are the highest errors which is made by the students.
Furthermore, the researcher would like to give some suggestions to be considered. The students should learn grammar as aspects of writing that consisted of the form of grammar based on each tenses, singular-plural, pronoun. preposition, articles, word order. Teachers should give clear explanations about grammar as aspects of writing and give an impressing teaching which can catch the students’ attention toward English writing activity.
