In the drum brakes there are supporting components such as brake thighs which are one of the important components in motorcycle braking. This component is included in the power successor system which functions to continue the performance of the brake pedal so that it can stop the wheel rotation perfectly. The problem that often occurs in the brake arm is that it is difficult to obtain original parts and circulate in the imitation parts market which is easily bent and brittle.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the improvement of mechanical properties of steel st 41 after carburizing process which will be applied to the motorcycle brake arm. The independent variables used were st 41 steel which had undergone heat treatment, SAE 40 engine oil quenching, with variations of charcoal as a carbon source, temperature of 9000 C with a holding time of 30 minutes. The tests carried out are chemical composition, hardness and bending testing.
The results obtained from this study are ST 41 plates. The tests carried out are hardness testing and curvature test. Mechanical properties of st 41 material with carburizing process increased hardness value and optimum curvature strength in variations of coconut shell charcoal with a temperature of 9000 C, its hardness value increased 11.08%, and the curvature strength increased 5.79% from ST 41 steel without carburizing.
