Indonesian students as foreign language learners still have difficulties in learning English, especially in delivering ideas in a written form. They need to consider about the grammatical components of English that differ from Indonesian language. This research describes errors based on surface strategy made by the students in writing a descriptive text. Thirty students from the tenth grade of SMKN 1 Dukuhturi Tegal were asked to write a descriptive text based on the theme of place.
In doing this research, the researcher used Descriptive Method and the procedures of error analysis itself. The method is purposed to analyze the problem or case happened at research. All students writing are, then, analyzed, in order to investigate students’ errors.
Through the test, the researcher found and known the types of errors are made by the students and make the table of errors percentage to know the most common or uncommon errors found in students’ descriptive writing. Then, the researcher interpreted the data is about the types of errors and error classification from its types are made by the students.
Based on the surface strategy, it can be concluded that the students have difficulties in omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Most of students tend to make errors of misformation. The result of this study can be used as an additional reference for those who are interested in studying error analysis, gives a contribution to linguistic study and helps to correct the errors of the students’ writing in descriptive text.
