The reason why the researcher choose this research because the students in the 10 high school class PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang feel tired and bored if they get the task of English and homework task, especially on the increase of vocabulary. They think that English is a difficult lesson. Students cannot understand the meaning of vocabulary in a sentence, they are lazy to find out what the meaning of the vocabulary is in the dictionary causing errors in identifying words, interpreting a paragraph etc. Therefore, the researcher need to apply a method for the attainment of vocabulary by using short stories.
The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of short stories is effective for teaching vocabulary and to find out whether this short story has a positive effect on the increase of vocabulary in the first grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang academic year 2017/2018. The population of the research is 123 students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang academic year 2017/2018. The sample are 60 students taken by using cluster random sampling technique, devided into experimental group and control group. Experimental group consist of 30 students and control group consist of 30 students.
From this research result that r-test is bigger than r-table with significance level 5% (0,589> 0,361). This means using short stories is effective to teach vocabulary achievement in the first grade of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang. R-test is bigger than the r-table (5,84> 2,001), it means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. So it can be concluded using short stories gives a positive effect toward students vocabulary achievement in the first grade of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang academic year 2017/2018. Based on the finding of the research, the researcher suggest that the English teacher should be able to apply short stories because it can be more interesting, fun and conducive to the goal learning and also as one of many alternative that can be used in teaching learning vocabulary achievement.
