A STUDY ON SPEECH ACTS OF ANNE ELLIOT’S UTTERANCES IN A 2007 PERSUASION MOVIE

The objectives of this research are to identify the types of illocutionary act uttered by Anne Elliot in a 2007 Persuasion movie and to analyze the effects of perlocutionary act expected by Anne Elliot to the hearer in a 2007 Persuasion movie.
The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data is in the form of utterances spoken by Anne Elliot in a 2007 Persuasion movie. This movie consists of 31 scenes. There are 99 utterances of Anne Elliot in a 2007 Persuasion movie. In this research, the researcher applies Searle’s theory (1976) and Austin (1962) theory in the analysis.
The findings in this research are: first, there are five kinds of illocutionary acts employed by Anne Elliot’s utterances in a 2007 Persuasion movie such as declaration, representatives, commissives, dirrectives and expressives. The order of percentage from the highest to the lowest of illocutionary act of Anne Elliot’s utterances in Persuasion (2007) movie are representatives (36,36%), dirrectives (23,46%), expressives (23,46%), commissives (15,30%) and declarations (2,02%).
Second, there are nine types of perlocutionary acts can be found in Anne Elliot’s utterances in a 2007 Persuasion movie such as to convince the hearer, to surprise the hearer, to frighten the hearer, to cause the hearer, to alarm the hearer, to inspire the hearer, to get the hearer to do something and to get the hearer realizing about something. The order of percentage from the highest to the lowest of illocutionary act of Anne Elliot’s utterances in a 2007 Persuasion movie are to get the hearer realizing about something (40,04%), to convince the hearer (25,25%), to cause the hearer (16,16%), to get the hearer to do something (11,11%), to surprise the hearer (3,03%), to frighten the hearer (2,02%), to alarm the hearer (1,01%) and to inspire the hearer (1,01%).
There are some perlocutionary acts which can not be found in Anne Elliot’s utterances in a 2007 Persuasion movie such as to bore the hearer, to annoy the hearer, to insult the hearer and to enlighten the hearer.
From the result of this research, it can be concluded that Anne are smart and wise woman. She produces utterances properly without hurting someone else. She is willingly for helping someone eventhough it ignores her business.
