The objective of this research is to know the effect of using Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) Method towards students’ vocabulary achievement. The hypothesis of this research is there is positive effect of using ESA Methods on the students’ Vocabulary achievement of the tenth grade students at Senior High School 4 Tegal in academic year 2017/2018. The number of the samples is 62 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. It is classified into two groups. They are experiment group consisting of 31 students who are taught by using ESA Method and control group consisting of 31 students who are not taught by using ESA Method.
The sample is given a test containing 40 multiple choice items. The writer uses external validity and split half Sperman-Brown formula to know the reliability of the instrument. The writer gave a try out test for the students having the same competence with the sample.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. The result computing t-test value is 2,604. Based on the degree of freedom (df) 60 on the level significant of 5% t-table is 1,671, it shows that t-test is higher than t-table (2,604>1,671). It means that there is significant difference of the students’ vocabulary achievement between students who are taught by using ESA Method and the students who are not taught by using ESA Method.
The conclusion of this research is the use of ESA Method gives positive effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement on the tenth grade students of Senior High School 4 Tegal in academic year 2017/2018. Based on the finding on the research, it is suggested for the English Teachers to apply ESA Method as one of many alternative methods in teaching learning activity.
