THE EFFECT OF USING CHUNKING STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION (An Experimental Study at theTenth Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in the Academic Year 2017/2018)

The purpose of this research is to gain information about the effect of using Chunking Strategy towards students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2017/2018.
The hypothesis of this research are formulated as follows: (H1) there is significant difference using Chunking strategy towards students’ reading comprehension between the tenth grade students who are taught by using Chunking strategy and who are not taught by using Chunking strategy at SMK N 1 Dukuhturi in academic year of 2017/2018 and (H0) there isno significant difference using Chunking strategy towards students’ reading comprehension between the tenth grade students who are taught by using Chunking strategy and who are not taught by using Chunking strategy at SMK N 1 Dukuhturi in academic year of 2017/2018.
The population of this research is the tenth grade students in SMK Negeri 1 Dukuhturi. The number of population is 557. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique with two group post test only design. The total of sample is 60 students, 30 students are as experimental group and 30 students are as control group. The experimental group is the group who are taught by using Chunking strategy. The control group is the group who are taught without using Chunking strategy. The sample is given a test containing 50 multiple choice items. The writer use external validity to know the validity and reliability of the instrument.
Based on the result of data analysis, score of t-ratio is 2,595. While score of t-table is at 5% level significance and on the degree of freedom 58 is 1,672. Thus, t-ration is higher than t-table (2,595>1,672). It means that there is significant difference using Chunking strategy towards students’ reading comprehension between the tenth grade students who are taught by using Chunking strategy and who are not taught by using Chunking strategy at SMK N 1 Dukuhturi in academic year of 2017/2018.
The writer concludes that the use of Chunking strategy gives positive effect towards students reading comprehension to the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Dukuhturi in the academic year of 2017/2018. The writer suggests for the teachers to use Chunking strategy to improve students reading comprehension.
