THE EFFECT OF USING ETR (EXPERIENCE TEXT RELATIONSHIP) METHOD TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study on the Seventh Grade Students at SMP N 4 Petarukan in the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

The objective of this research projectwas to find out whether the use of ETR method gives positif effect toward students’ reading achievement. ETR method can make students know new knowledge in learning reading and it can help the teacher in learning process.
Based on the related theories, the research hypothesis was drawn as follows: there is positive effect on the students’ reading achievement at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Petarukan in the academic year of 2017/2018 after they are taught by ETR method. This research was experimental researchusingpost test only two-group design. The population of this research was 285 students of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 4 Petarukan. The writer used cluster random sampling as the technique to get the sample and took 60 students as the sample in this research; 30 students of the experimental group and 30 students of the control group. The instrument of this research was multiple choice test.
In this research, the researcher used t-test formula, it was used to know the positive effect of using ETR method toward students’ reading achievement.The data shows score of t-table at 5% level of significance and on the degree freedom of 58 is 1,672. While t-ratio is 2,894, so t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,894>1,672).It means that there is a positive effect on the students’ reading achievement after they are taught by ETR method of the seventh gradestudents of SMP Negeri 4 Petarukan in the academic year 2017/2018.
Based on the research result, English teachers are suggested to use ETR method to improve students’ reading achievement. Furthermore, they need to create an intensive environment during the learning process.
