THE EFFECT OF APPLYING POWERPOINT TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING SKILL (An Experimental Study at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

The objective of this research project is to know whether there is any positive effect of applying Powerpoint toward students’ reading skill at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2017/2018.
The research hypothesis is the implementation of Powerpoint gives positive effect toward students’ reading skill of the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2017/2018.
In this research project, the population is fifth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2017/2018, which was totally 137 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to take sample of the research. The total numbers of sample were 60 students which consisted of; 30 students as experimental group, 30 students as control group and 30 students as try out classes. The experiment group was the of students who are taught by using Powerpoint. The control group was the group of students who are not taught by using Powerpoint. After teaching for 8 meetings, the researcher gave a test to experiment group and control group. The test instrument of this research project was multiple- choice test which consisted of 30 items and has four options, they are; A, B, C, and D.
The data was analyzed by using t-test. Score of t-test showed 1,950. While score of t-table at 5% level significance and on the degree of 58 was 1,672. Thus, t-test was higher than t-table (1,950> 1,672). According to result of data, research hypothesis is accepted.
It could be concluded that there was positive effect of using Powerpoint toward students’ reading skill at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal. Therefore,the researcher suggests English teachers to use Powerpoint in teaching reading in order to students not bored and interested on English lesson.
