THE EFFECT OF USING SEMANTIC MAPPING STRATEGY TOWARD STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom In the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

The aim of the research is to find out the effect of using Semantic Mapping strategy toward students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in the academic year of 2017/2018. The problem formulation in this research is “Is there a positive effect of using Semantic Mapping strategy toward students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in the academic year of 2017/2018?”.
This research was an experimental study. The population of the study was the second grade students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in the academic year of 2017/2018 which consisted of 100 students from 3 classes. In this research, the writer took 60 students for the sample who are selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In the designing study the writer used Two-Group Design which consisted of two classes that have same levels. They were experimental group and control group. In each group consisted of 30 students.
In collecting data, the writer used vocabulary test in multiple choice as the instrument of the test in this research. The tryout instrument of the research consisted of 50 test items. There were 41 valid test items and 9 invalid test items. Then, 40 valid test items were used in pre test and post test for the sample of research. The data analysis was calculated by using t-test formula. Based on the result of calculation, the value of t-test was 2,004 with the t-table was 1,672 at the 5% significant level and degree of freedom (df) 58. It shows that the t-test was higher that t-table (2,004 > 1,672). It can be concluded that the effect of using Semantic Mapping strategy gives positive effect towards students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in the academic year of 2017/2018.
The conclusion of this research is that using Semantic Mapping strategy gives positive effect toward students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade students of MTs Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in the academic year of 2017/2018. As suggestion, the teacher should be able to use appropriate strategy in teaching English lesson especially in teaching vocabulary. Teaching English by using Semantic Mapping strategy gives positive effect to the students since it progressed informally, without causing stress and bored. So, the writer suggests for the English teacher to use this strategy in teaching vocabulary in Junior High School.
