Research Project. Strata I Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Drs. JCS Pradjarto, M.Pd. and The Second Advisor is H. Sumartono, M.Pd.
Key words: Exposure, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application (EGRA), Team Pair Solo (TPS), Students’ Grammar Achievement.
The objective of this research project is to find out which technique is more effective to be used in teachinggrammar for the first grade students’ in SMK N 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2017/108. The research hypothesis is there is significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement between students who are taught by using EGRA technique and those who are taught by using TPS technique of SMK N 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2017/2018.
This research is an experimental research which uses two group design post-test only. The population of this research is all of the first-grade students of SMK N 1 Tegal, which is totally 354 students. The cluster random sampling technique is used to take the sample which consists of 60 students who are divided into two groups; Group 1 consists of 30 students who are taught by using Exposure, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application (EGRA) technique, and Group 2 consists of 30 students who are taught by using Team Pair Solo (TPS)technique. In this research, the writer uses a grammar test of multiple choices as the instrument of the research which consists of 50 items. In collecting the primary data, the writer carried out seven meetings of treatment and final test to both of the groups. Before giving treatment, the writer gives a try out to test the validity and reliability of the instrument.
The writer analyzed the data by using t-test. The score of t-ratio is 2,894. While score of t-table with 5% significant leveland on the degree of freedom 58 is 1,672. Thus, t- ratio is higher than t-table (2,894> 1,672). It means that there is significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement between students who are taught by using EGRA technique and those who are taught by using TPS techniqueof SMK N 1 Tegal. In addition, the average of group 1 is higher than the average of group 2 (79,4 > 73,93), it can be concluded that EGRA technique is more effective than TPS technique. Then, the writer suggests to the English teacher to use EGRAtechnique to improve the students’ grammar achievement.
