THE EFFECT OF ENGLISH NEWSPAPER ON THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION An Experimental Research to the Tenth Grade of SMA BP Adiwerna in the Academic Year of 2017/2018

Students of tenth graders in SMA BP Adiwerna got bad score of English reading test. They were not given a good media in reading lesson. A media to teach reading is needed. The objectives of this research project was to find out the effective of English newspaper for the students’ reading comprehension and to find out the significant difference between the students who were taught by English newspaper and the students who were not taught by English newspaper of the tenth graders of SMA BP Adiwerna in the academic year 2017/2018.
The research was true experiment research design. The total population in this research was 60. The random sampling technique was used to choose the sample. The sample was divided into two groups; the first group was experiment group who were taught by English newspaper and the second was control group who were not taught by English newspaper. In collecting the data, pre test and post test were conducted. And the data analysis was calculated by using SPSS program.
Based on data analysis, the first null hypothesis (H01) was tested by using paired sample t test, it was found that the result of Sig. (2 tailed) was lower than α (0,000 < 0,05). It was meant that the first null hypothesis (H01) was refused. It wass meant that the English newspaper was effective for the students’ reading comprehension. And the second hypothesis was tested by independent sample t test, it was found that the result of t test was higher than t table (3,893 > 1,686). It was meant that the second null hypothesis (H02) was refused. It was meant that there was significant difference between the students who were taught by English newspaper and the students who were not taught by English newspaper.
It was concluded that the use of English newspaper was effective and there was significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA BP Adiwerna in the academic year 2017/2018. It was suggested for English teachers to use English newspaper to increase reading comprehension of the tenth graders of senior high school.
