THE EFFECT OF USING ENGLISH COMICS TOWARDS STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL (An Experimental Research at the Second Graders of SMP N 2 Balapulang in the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is positive effect of using English Comics towards students’ speaking skill at the second grade of SMP N 2 Balapulang in the Academic Year of 2017/2018.
This research was done by classifying sample into two groups, they are experimental and control group. Each group consisted of 35 students. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling technique and they were divided into two groups, first group was experimental group which consisted of students who were taught by using English Comics, and the second group was control group which consisted of students who were taught without using English Comics.
The research instrument used in this research was spoken test. Performance test is selected by the writer as the instrument of the spoken test. The students were given a comic. They had to retell the story in 3 minutes individually.
Data analysis of this research was tested by using t-test. Based on the result with degree of freedom (df) 68 on the level significant of 5% t-table is 1.995, it shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (8.688 > 1.995). It means that there was significant difference of speaking skill between students who were taught by using English Comics and the students who taught without using English Comics.
From the result of data analysis, the writer concluded that the use of English comics gives positive effect towards students’ speaking skill at the second grade of SMP N 2 Balapulang in the academic year of 2017/2018.
There are several suggestions in order to increase the students’ speaking skill. First, the English teacher should give motivation to the students to increase their ability in English for all skills, especially in speaking ability. Second, the teacher not only gives the material or knowledge but also gives chance to the students to share each other about the lesson, and the last, the teaching and learning of speaking should be delivered in an interesting concept.
