THE EFFECT OF PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT TOWARDS STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT (An Experimental Research in SMP N 04 Tanjung in the Academic Year of 2017/2018 )

The objective of this research is to find out whether Portfolio Assessment is effective to use in teaching writing to the eighth grade students of SMP N 4 Tanjung in the academic year of 2017/2018. The research is done by classifying sample into two groups they are the experimental group and Control group. Each group consist of 20 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique. They are devided into two group, group one is experimental group consist of students who are taught by using Portfolio Assessment method and group two is control group consisting of students who are taught without using Portfolio Assessment method.
The sample of research are given a writing test. The writer gave pre-test to experimental and control group before giving treatment to experimental group and giving post-test to each group after giving treatment.
Data analysis of the research is tested by using t-test. Based on the data analysis, t-ratio is 9,862. The writer consults it to t-table with 5% significant level and the degree of freedom (df) = (n1+ n2) -2 = (20 + 20) – 2 = 38. The writer finds the t-table is 2,024. It mean that t-ratio is higher than t-table (9, 862 > 2, 024). Because of the result of t-test is higher than t-table, so the null hypothesis (Ho) is refused and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference between experimental group and control group.
It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between students that using portfolio assessment and the students that without portfolio assessment.
