THE EFFECT OF USING CHINESE WHISPER TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study at the Fifth Grade Students of SDN 01 Kaliprau in the Academic Year of 2017/2018)

In this research, the fifth grade students of SDN 01 Kaliprau think that learning English is difficult. Hence, the writer tries to solve this problem, especially on comprehending the vocabulary skill through the Chinese Whisper Game. The objective of this research is to find out whether Chinese Whisper Game gives positive effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement at the fifth grade students of SDN 01 Kaliprau in the academic year of 2017/2018.
The research was conducted by using two group designs. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, first group was experiment group which consisted of students who were taught by using Chinese Whisper Game and second group was control group which consisted of students who were not taught by using Chinese Whisper Game but using conventional method. Each group consisted of 30 students. The writer gives try out test in multiple choices form to the different group out of the sample. The total number of try out test were 40. Try out test was done to get the validity and reliability of the instrument. After computing the validity and reliability, the writer conducted the research in eight meetings and applied vocabulary test (posttest) which consisted of 30 questions in multiple choices form to the experiment group and control group.
Data analysis of this research computed by using t-test. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5%, t-table was1,672 while the t-test was 2,429. It shows that t-ratio was higher than t-table (2,429>1,672). Based on posttest computing analysis result, it was also found that mean of experiment group was 7,41 and mean of control group was6,89. It means that mean of experiment group was higher than control group (7,41>6,89). Based on the result, it can be stated that hypothesis of this research (H1) was accepted.
The conclusion of this research is Chinese Whisper Game gave positive effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement at the fifth grade of SDN 01 Kaliprau in the academic year of 2017/2018. Based on the conclusion, it can be stated that Chinese Whisper Game can be recommended as the strategy in teaching English vocabulary.
