The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of teaching English vocabulary using cooperative learning with jigsaw type to the fifth year students of SD Negeri 01 Lawangrejo Pemalang in academy year 2008/2009.
Based on the theoretical background and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is "The application of cooperative learning with jigsaw type can give positive effect on the English vocabulary of the fifth grade students". In other word, the student who are taught by cooperative learning with jigsaw type will get better achievement in learning English vocabulary than the students who are not taugh by cooperative learning with jigsaw type.
The population of this research is the fifth grade students in the second semester, at SD Negeri 01 Lawangrejo Pemalang academic year 2008/2009. The sample of this research is 30 students that is divided in to two groups. The first group is an experimental group, which consist of 15 students, and the second group is a control group which consist of 15 students. The sample is taken by using random sampling technique.
The data of this research is gained from a multiple choice test, which consists of 20 items. The data of this research is analized by using t-test. The result of this research shows that t-test is 2,3176, whereas t-table at significant level of 5% is 2,048. The result shows that t-test is higher than t-table. So, the hypothesis is accepted.
The conclusions of this research is that the application of cooperative learning with jigsaw type can give positive effect on English vocabulary achievement of the fifth grade students in the second semester at SD Negeri 01 Lawangrejo Kabupaten Pemalang in academy year 2008/2009.
