The effectiveness of giving breakfast words technique to increase students' vocabulary mastery

The objective of this research is to know about the effectiveness of giving Breakfast Words technique in teaching vocabulary to the second grade students during the first semester in Academic year 2009 / 2010.
Based on the review of theory and frame of thinking, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows : Giving Breakfast words technique has positive effect in increasing students' vocabulary mastery. In the other word the students who are given Breakfast words will have better their English vocabulary mastery than those who aren't given breakfast words.
The Population of this research is the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang. The total number of the students is 306 . The writer uses random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of the sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups, the experiment group and control group and each group contains 30 students. The experiment group contains the students who are given Breakfast words and the control group contains the students who aren't given breakfast words as the second group.
The writer uses a test as the instrument of the research. The test takes 90 minutes to do. The type of the test is Multiple choice with four options A, B, C and D. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students having the same competence with samples of the study.
The data of this research are gained from the result of vocabulary test done by sample of research in the first semester. Data Analysis of this research is tested by using t- test . Based on the result of data analysis t- ratio is 3,9914 whereas t- table with the degree of freedom is 58 on the level of significance of 5% t- table is 2,000. It shows that t- ratio is higher than t- table (3,9914>2,000) .It means that there is a significant difference mastery in vocabulary between the students who are given Breakfast words and those who aren't given Breakfast words.
Thus the conclusion of this research is " Breakfast words technique gives positive effect on students' vocabulary mastery at the second grade students in the first semester of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang, in academic year 2009 / 2010 "
Suggestion : In developing students achievement in English, the teachers are better to pay more attention to the students vocabulary.
