The Use of Jigsaw Technique to Increase the Students' Vocabulary Mastery (An action research in the fourth grade of SDN 01 Bantarbolang in academic year 2009/2010)

The writer finds in the classroom action research that most of students feels English vocabulary is very difficult to learn and the teaching method was not interesting, because the teacher just uses text book and module in teaching activities that made students bored to learn. Besides that, if the teacher asks question, most of them sit quietly with their eyes averted, hoped the teacher did not call on them and breathe a sigh of relief. In this case, the writer uses jigsaw technique to increase the students' vocabulary so that the students can learn English with fun and more confident.
In jigsaw technique, the students are divided into 8 groups. Each group consists of 5 or 6 students. Each group is given different material to learn and do. The member of group who are active same material meet together to discuss the material, then the students back into their friends in a team. In this research the writer uses classroom activity to increase vocabulary mastery of 4th grade students of Elementary School, there are 43 students. The writer applies two cycles. Each cycle consists of four steps. There are the action design, the action implementation, observation, and reflection. The writer uses a test as the instrument that consists of 30 items in the form multiple choices with four options A, B, C, and D.
In the first cycle, there are 16 students who fulfill the minimal passing grade, it is 60,00. Classically, just 37,21% who fulfill the minimal passing grade. The students still shy to discuss each others, they only pay attention to the classroom position not the lesson. But, the students are interested in the lesson and new technique to learn English. The second cycle was successful, because there were 22 students who fulfill the minimal passing grade. Classically, 51, 16% who fulfill the minimal passing grade. The students felt free and confident to do the exercises and explain their friends, they are more active in learning and understand the material. They also could interact each other.
In this research, learning by jigsaw technique can raise the students' activeness in the class. They can understand the material and master the vocabulary well. They can also interact and get along with their friends. The students can learn English with fun and more confident. They support to go to school early to arrange the classroom position like desks and chairs. When the writer as the teacher entered the classroom, they are ready to accept the material into jigsaw.
Learning by using jigsaw technique, the students can master vocabulary well, they can interact and socialize with their friends.
