The purpose of this research is to know whether there is significant difference in writing ability between the eighth year students who have good mastery of grammar and those who have low mastery of grammar at SMP Negeri 4 Jatibarang. Based on the learning theory and the frame of thinking, the hypothesis of this research is purposed as follows : "English Grammar Mastery has positive effect on Writing ability of the eighth year students of Junior High School at SMP Negeri 4 Jatibarang "
The population of this research is the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 4 Jatibarang. The number of population is 240 students and by using cluster sampling technique, 60 students are taken as the sample, which is devided in to two groups. Each group consists of 30 students. The first group is the experimental group those who have good mastery of grammar and the second group is the control group those who have low mastery of grammar.
The research instrument use multiple choice test consisting of 60 items with four options A, B, C, or D.
The data is analyzed by using t-test statistic formula. To know whether the hypothesis is accepted or not, the calculation must be based on the table of t-distribution on the significant degree of 58.
The calculation of the data analysis shows that t-ratio is 2.652. to writing and 3,666 to grammar on the significant level 5% and the degree of freedom (dk) 58, t-table is 2.000, because t-ratio is bigger than t-table (2.652 > 2.000) and (3,666 > 2,000) , so that the research hypothesis is accepted.
From the analysis of the result above, it can be concluded that English Grammar Mastery has positive effect on writing ability of the eighth year students of Junior High School at SMP Negeri 4 Jatibarang Kabupaten Brebes in Academic Year 2009/2010.
