A new word can be formed from an open class category. Open class categories consist of major lexical categories. Adjective is one of the kinds of major lexical categories. From this category new words can be increased. So, it is relatively common for new adjectives to be formed by such processes as derivation.
The objectives of the research are to find out the kinds of error made by the students and find out the dominant errors made by students on constructing the adjective that added with suffixes.
The significance of the study is make the students clear and understand about adjective which is form from other word that added by suffix and knows about suffix that form adjective.
The population of the research is the second year students of SMP N 1 Pangkah in Academic Year 2009/2010. The total number of population is 360 students. In this research the writer takes one class as the sample, there is class VIII which consist of 30 students using random sampling.
The data is obtained by conducting test. The test consists of 35 conversion items. Based on the table of computation, the writer find out there are two kinds of error made by the students. The errors are error in writing a new word (adjective) that formed from other words and error in choosing suffix that should be added in a root word.
The number of percentages of each error are error in writing a new word (adjective) that formed from other words (46,7%) and error in choosing suffix that should be added in a root word (53,3%). So the dominant error is error in choosing the suffix that should be added in a root word.
The writer suggested that teacher should give motivation and give clear explanations about the material, so students understand with their explanation. But students also must be serious in learning.
