Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui penguasaan siswa terhadap simple past tense dan kemampuan siswa menulis narrative text, dan juga untuk mengetahui apakan terdapat hubungan antara penguasaan siswa terhadap simple past tense dan kemampuan siswa menulis narrative text.
Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh mahasiswa semester VI Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Pancasakti Tegal Tahun Pelajaran 2009/2010. tehnik pengambilan sample menggunakan Tehnik Random Sampling. Terdapat sebanyak 231 mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Pancasakti Tegal Tahun Pelajaran 2009/2010 dan peneliti mengambil sebanyak 30 mahasiswa sebagai sample.
Peneliti menggunakan dua macam test, yaitu tes simple past tense dan tes menulis. Kedua tes berbentuk tertulis. Pada tes simple past tense peneliti menggunakan pilihan ganda. Instrument tersebut digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa. Sebelum instrument digunakan, peneliti mengujinya terlebih dahulu untu mengetahui validitas dan reliabilitas dari instrument. Peneliti kemudian menyeleksi tes yang valid dan reliable kemudian digunakan sebagai instrument penelitian.
Hasil dari penelitian menunjukan terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara penguasaan siswa terhadap simple past tense dan kemampuan siswa menulis teks narrative. Hasil tersebut ditunjukan oleh perhitungan mengunakan rumus korelasi denganhalis 0.446. Taraf significant Pearson yang digunakan adalah 5 % yaitu 0.361. menunjukan bahwa dari hasil perhitungan menggunakan rumus kerelasi Pearson lebih besar dari taraf significant dapat disimpilkan bahwa hubungan antara kedua variable significant
Dari hasil penelitian, peneliti menyarankan agar meningkatkan penguasaan mereka terhadap simple past tense, selain itu peneliti menyarankan siswa untuk menngkatkan kemampuan menulis narrative teks kerena penguasaan simple past tense akan mempengaruhi kemampuan mereka dalam menulis teks narrative.

The objectives of the study are to find out the students mastery of simple past tense and the students abilities in writing narrative text, and also to find out whether or not there is a correlation between the students' mastery of simple past tense and their abilities in writing narrative text.
The population of this study is the six semester students of the English Department of Pancasakti University in the Academic Year 2009/2010. The sampling process was administered by applying a random sampling technique. There were 231 students of the six semester students of the English Department of Pancasakti University and the writer took 30 students as the sample.
The writer administered two kinds of tests, namely simple past test and writing test. Both of the tests were in written form. In simple past test, the writer used multiple choice test. The instrument used for measuring the achievement. Before the instrument was used, it's tried out first. The main purpose it was to find out the validity, reliability, of simple past tense in a multiple choice test. The writer then selected the items before they were used as the instrument of this research.
The result of this research showed that there is a significant correlation between the students' mastery of simple past tense and writing narrative text ability. This result is obtained from the computation of the correlation between the students' mastery of simple past tense and writing narrative text ability applied to the sample is 0.446. The critical value of the Pearson r with the 5 % significant level is 0.361. It means that the result obtained from the computation is greater than its critical value. Therefore, the writer concludes that the correlation between the two variables above is significant.
From the result of the research, the writer suggests that to improve the students' ability in writing narrative text, students should improve their mastery of simple past tense, because the mastery of simple past tense can support their ability in writing narrative text. It is essential to the teacher to know that one of the factors affect the students ability in writing narrative is the students' mastery of simple past tense.
