The objective of this research is to analyze student's error in mastering the discussion and explanation text of The Twelfth Students at SMA Negeri 3 Pemalang in Academic Year 2009/2010.
Based on the review of related study and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is purposed as follows: "there is a significant student's error in mastering the discussion and explanation text".
The populations of the research are 420 students. The samples of this research are 30 students. The samples are taken by descriptive technique. The writer used test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is the essay. To know the reliability and validity of the test, the writer has done try out the instrument by giving test to 30 students who have the same competence as the samples of research. The data of this research is tested by r test. On the level of significant is 5% gained with the r-table 0,361. It is absolutely said that r test is bigger then r table (r-test 0,691> r-table 0,361) it can conclude that the instrument of this research is valid.
The result shows that students faced problem in mastering the discussion and explanation text which is the student have an error in understanding it. But some of them are good in reading the text. There is a positive effect to give the student text and ask them to analyze the text, in this case is the discussion and explanation text.
