The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation between English grammar mastery and translating ability in narative text of the eight year students at SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng. Based on the learning theorites and the frame of thinking, the hipothesis of this research is purposed : "English grammar mastery is significant correlation with translating ability narative text of the eight year student at SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng Kabupaten Tegal in academic year 2009/2010. The population of this research is the eight year students of SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng Kabupaten Tegal in the second semester in academic years 2009/2010. The number of population is 360 students and by using random sampling tecnique, 60 students are taken as the sample. The research instrument use multiple choice test consisting of 20 items and with four options A,B,C and D and translating test. The data is analyzed by using pearson product moment, to know whether the hyphothesis is accepted or not , the calculation must be based on the table of r-product moment on the significant level of 5%. The calculation of the data analysis shows that r-ratio is 0,415 and r-table is 0,361 on the siignificant level 5% , because r-ratio is bigger than r-table (0,415>0,361), so that research is accepted. From the analysis of the result above , it can be concluded that English grammar mastery has significant correlation on translating ability narative text of the Eight year students of junior high school at SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng Kabupaten Tegal in academic year 2009/2010." />

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada korelasi yang signifikan antara penguasaan tata bahasa Inggris dan kemampuan menterjemahkan teks naratif bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng.
Berdasarkan landasan teori dan kerangka berpikir, maka hipotesis pada penelitian ini dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut : "Adanya korelasi signifikan antara penguasaan tata bahasa Inggris dengan kemampuan menterjemahkan teks naratif siswa kelas VIII di SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng Tahun Pelajaran 2009/2010."
Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng, Kabupaten Tegal semester 2 Tahun Pelajaran 2009/2010. Jumlah populasi adalah 360 siswa, dengan menggunakan tehnik random sampling 30 siswa diambil sebagai sampel penelitian.
Instrument penelitian menggunakan pilihan ganda yang terdiri dari 20 butir dengan 4 pilihan A,B,C,D dan tes terjemahan.
Analisa data di uji dengan Pearson product moment , untuk mengetahui hipotesis diterima atau ditolak. Perhitungan harus berdasarkan tabel r-product moment dengan taraf signifikasi 5 %.
Perhitungan analisa data dapat diketahui bahwa r-hitung 0,415 dan r-tabel 0,361 pada taraf signifikasi 5%, r-tabel sebesar 0,361, karena r-hitung lebih besar dari r-tabel ( 0,415 > 0,361 ) sehingga hipotesis penelitian diterima.Dari hasil analisa diatas dapat disimpulkan bahwa adanya korelasi yang signififkan antara penguasaan tata bahasa Inggris dan kemampuan menterjemahkan teks naratif bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kedung Banteng Kabupaten Tegal Tahun Pelajaran 2009/2010.
