The topic of this research is common errors of preposition in descriptive writing made by the second grade students of SMP Negeri 19 Tegal in Academic Year 2009/2010. The problem of this research is what kind of the highest rank of error of preposition occur in descriptive writing? Then the objective of this research is to identify and to describe the highest rank of error of using preposition in descriptive writing made by the second grade students of SMP N 19 Tegal in the academic year 2009/2010.
The population of the research is the students of the second grade of SMP Negeri 19 Tegal. The writer chooses 40 students as the samples of this research by using random sampling technique. A completion test type is used to gather the data. In analyzing the data, the writer uses percentage formula.
The result of the analysis is that it is found that there are 299 errors on preposition. They are errors on prepositions of time (39 errors = 13,04%), errors on prepositions of place (89errors = 29,77%), errors on prepositions after verbs (24errors = 8,03%), errors on prepositions after adjectives (50errors = 16,72%), and errors on prepositions after participial adjectives (97errors = 32,44%).
It is suggested that the English teachers of SMP N 19 Tegal should use an effective and simple method in teaching descriptive writing. It is also suggested that the teacher should provide a lot of drills and written exercises relating to the use of prepositions.
