The objective of this research is to know whether there is any positive effect of vocabulary mastery toward student writing ability on the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Pangkah Tegal Regency in academic year 2009/2010.
Based on the theoretical foundation and the logical framework, the hypothesis is proposed as follows: vocabulary mastery give positive effect toward student writing ability.
The population of the research is the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Pangkah, Tegal Regency with the total number 300 students. To collect the data, the writer took 60 students from the population as the sample. The writer used two group design, the first group and second group. Each group consist of 30 students. The first group is the student who have good vocabulary mastery and the second group is the student who have poor vocabulary mastery. Then both of them were given the same writing test.
The writer used a multiple choice and essay test as the instrument of the research. The multiple choice test consist of 20 items which have five options and the essay test making a narrative text. The students did the test in 90 minutes.
The data of this research is gained from the writing test that was given to the sample of this research. To analyze the data, the writer used t-test to know the difference between the two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 5.910 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 and the level of significance (?) 5% and the t-table (5.190 > 2.000). It can be concluded that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is there is a positive effect of vocabulary mastery toward student writing ability in SMA Negeri 1 Pangkah, Tegal Regency in academic year 2009/2010.
