The objective of the research is to know the effect of using cooperative learning NHT (Numbered Head Together) type on the students' reading narrative text achievement at the second grade students at SMP N 6 Tegal. Based on the learning theories and the frame of thinking, the hypothesis of the research as follows: "NHT technique effective on the students' reading narrative text achievement at the second grade students at SMP N 6 Tegal".
The population of the research is the students of the second grade of SMP Negeri 6 Tegal. The number population is 285 students. The writer uses random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups, each of group consists of 30 students. Group I is experimental group, it consists of the students who are taught by using NHT technique, and group II is control group, it consists of the students who are not taught by using NHT technique.
The research instrument used is multiple choice test which consists of 30 items and each item has four options. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer tries out the instrument by giving test to 30 students having the same competence with the sample of the study.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of data analysis shows that t-test is 4, 616, with degree of freedom is 58 and the level of significant (?) 5% = 1, 645. It is absolutely said that t-test is bigger than t-table (4,616 > 1,645), because of t-test is bigger than t-table, so that the null hypothesis (Ho) is REJECTED and hypothesis of the research is ACCEPTED. From the analysis result above, the writer can conclude that NHT technique effective to improve reading narrative text achievement and Mean of the experimental group is bigger than KKM reading at second grade students of SMP N 6 Tegal (76,6 > 71).
