MARENDRA, JOHAN. "Improving Students' Reading Achievement through Contextual Teaching and Learning Model (A Classroom Action Research in the First Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kramat in Academic Year 2009/2010)". Strata 1 Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal.
Key word: Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) as learning model, students' reading achievement.
The choice of model or strategies in teaching will highly influence students' success in learning. Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) as a strategy will help teachers to relate subject matter content to students' real lives so that the students know the benefits of learning in the class. CTL will give the students time to practice the target language and to reflect them. In other words, the students will be able to improve their ability or competence in English.
This classroom action research was done in 3 (three) cycles. Each cycle consists of 1) Planning, 2) Action, 3) Observation, 4) Reflection which conducted about 2 (two) months. The subject of this research is class X.1 SMA Negeri 1 Kramat. In order to know the students' reading achievement, the result of each test was analyzed. The participation of the students during the teaching and learning process was gained from the result of the observation. Teacher's performance as additional data was also analyzed based on the principles of CTL.
The indicator of the CAR's success is if at least 80% of the students get score 65 for each skill, and at least 80% of the students are active during the teaching and learning process. The result shows that the average score of students' reading achievement is 69,74. In the first cycle the number of students who get score 65 or higher than 65 is 32 students (76,2%) and the students who are active during the teaching and learning is 18 students (42,86%). In the second cycle the number of students who get score 65 or higher than 65 is 34 students (81%) and the students who are active during the teaching and learning is 24 students (57,15%). In the third cycle the number of students who get score 65 or higher than 65 is 38 students (90,5%) and the students who are active during the teaching and learning is 36 students (85,72%).
Based on the result, it can be concluded that students' reading achievement has improved. This implies that Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) are appropriate in teaching English. This CTL seems in line with Competence-Based Curriculum. The classroom action research is deemed necessary by teacher in order to get maximum result of teaching and learning process.
