KWL is a strategy used to motivate students to be more active reader. This strategy is done by asking students to make predictions about what they read, so the teachers can also predict their knowledge about the topic. The objective of research in this research is to find out the positive effect of using KWL Strategy toward students’ reading comprehension to the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tegal in academic year of 2016/2017. This is experimental research with two groups design. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose sample of the research. Population of this research is the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2016/2017. The number of population is 256 students. The sample is 60 students. Each group consists of 30 students. The writer gives posttest to collect the data. The instrument of this research is reading test. The test contains of 40 items of multiple choice with four alternative answers a, b, c, and d. Data analysis are divided into two; Pre analysis testing and hypothesis testing.The result shows that calculating t-test by using IBM SPSS 22 to check the hypothesis, the writer computed the data using paired sample t-test. The result of data analysis on the significance (2-tailed) is 0.000. the null hypothesis will be rejected if significance 2 tailed is smaller than 0.05. It can be concluded that KWL Strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension. The conclusion of this research states that the implementation of KWL Strategy is effective to the Eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2016/2017, the implementation is categorized strong effective, and there is significance different of students’ reading comprehension between the students who are taught by using KWL Strategy and the students who are not. This strategy is effective to be taught in teaching reading comprehension, the student can be more active in teaching learning process.
